Mark 4:35-41

That day when evening came, He said to His disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took Him along, just as He was, in the boat. There were also other boats with Him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

He said to His disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey Him!”

The question that Jesus asked sticks out to me. It wasn’t that they were afraid a storm may come or that they were upset and complaining about something minor. It says they were in the middle of a storm! I think I would be reacting about the same way. But Jesus questions their faith and courage here. So often we can talk a big game…but when the storms come we run and hide it give in too quickly. It’s in these storms that our faith must be most evident. It’s in these storms when we must trust that God is in control of our waves and wind. Build a foundation for your faith now…so that when the storms come up you have faith to stand on. Stand tall against the storms…because we have the one who can wipe them away.
